“Secret Faults”
“Who can understand his errors? Cleanse Thou me from secret faults.” (Psalm 19:12)
The Spirit is grieved by self-will, pride, conceit, and any tendency to a self-righteous spirit; and if these are not quelled, we shall have a furnace ten times hotter then we have had. In the furnace we are brought to feel we need mercy; and nothing will subdue these things but a sense of God’s mercy. This will make us like little children, tractable and teachable. In the Name of God I say, let not your foolish questions and nibblings and legal efforts and care make religion contemptible. These things God despises, with all odd ways. But a broken and contrite heart God will not despise. Now the end of those evils is death; and in them you will perish, unless brought out. I fear exceedingly for those who continue at a distance from the LORD. If they belong to Him, the way they will be brought back will probably be terrible; I am sure it will. Now if God puts a fear in your heart, and leads you to feel your own weakness, and go to Him and tell Him of this self-will and other evils, this will show He is your Strength and Redeemer. And how will it be manifested to others? By a teachable, tractable, childlike spirit, leading you to commit everything into His hands.
