A Study of 1st John 2:21

“I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth.” (1st John 2:21)

The Holy Scriptures identify every true son and daughter of God by many different names and descriptions. They are identified as those who have been called with an holy calling by the Holy Ghost. They are identified as wheat, sheep, the seed of Abraham, and those who have been washed in the precious blood of Jesus Christ their LORD. God’s true children are known as blessed children, who have been blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ. They are identified as a people zealous of good works and who follow the Lamb whithersoever He goeth. God’s people are those who believe the gospel, obey the commandments of Christ, and keep the words of His testimony.

These are but a few examples of the many various names and descriptions that God uses to identify spiritual Israel; the list could easily be lengthened into a small volume. The Apostle John adds to this descriptive list by identifying God’s children in our text as those that know the truth. God’s people know the truth; this is what distinguishes the children of God from the children of the devil.

God’s people know the truth. But do you know the truth? Do you believe the truth? Do you love the truth? Do you know and believe that no lie is of the truth? Believest thou this? If we honestly examine ourselves, to see whether or not we are the true children of God, we must both ask and answer these questions before God. Brethren, how important is the truth? The truth is everything. Without the truth, what do we have, but a false foundation fastened upon the lies of men who are deceived by the satanic darkness of this present evil world? Someone may ask, “Well, what truth are you referring to?” All truth—the truth of the Holy Scriptures, the truth of the LORD our God, the eternal truth of YAHWEH, which can never change or be changed, the living and glorified Truth, who is the Lord Jesus Christ Himself.

In the light of this modern society and religion of relativity, it is important to note that the truth is not a subjective thing; the truth is not a matter of opinion. Man’s feelings do not determine what is true, no matter how strongly he may feel about the point of truth in question. If we call ourselves believers, we must readily and joyfully submit to the doctrine of Christ our Saviour. If we refuse to submit ourselves to God’s truth, we simply prove ourselves to be children of the devil, instead of God’s children.

Someone once asked the question, “How much of God’s word do I have to believe in order to be a believer?” The answer to that question is obvious—every single word. The Lord Jesus said, “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God”. The key word in this verse is every. You and I cannot honestly call ourselves the sons and daughters of the Most High God, if we do not believe and live upon every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God—this is the teaching of the Lord Jesus. We know that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. That means that a seemingly small and insignificant lie will most assuredly corrupt the entirety of what we preach, and corrupt preaching is poisonous to the souls of men. I would not dare drink a glass of water, if I knew that it had even 0.001% ricin (an extremely lethal toxin) in it. Would you? To do so would be deadly, foolish, and insane; yet, men and women everywhere gladly drink in a false gospel message of corruption that contains poison so deadly that it separates men from God for eternity.

I want us to understand and believe that the truth of God is just as He is—without contradiction, without flaw, without any inconsistency, without sin, without any darkness, without any lies, or anything that is contrary to sound doctrine. Though divided into books, chapters, and verses for ease of reference, the revealed truth of God is one body of singular doctrine, and it cannot deny itself. God’s truth stands together, or it falls altogether. Either every word of God in the Bible is true, eternal, inerrant, and infallible, or every word God has said in the Bible is a lie. If even one sentence of God’s word is proven false then you are a fool to believe anything in God’s word and are of all men most miserable.

The Holy Spirit makes this simple principle obvious in our text when he says, “No lie is of the truth.” That means, if a preacher denies, rejects, or fights against any doctrine of God’s word, he must necessarily preach a lie in its stead and has thereby denied the truth of God altogether—his skill, giftedness, reputation, experience, and knowledge notwithstanding. I cannot say that God is holy, and then go on to deny his holiness by my doctrine, and still preach the truth. But men everywhere across the world say and believe this very thing! They say, “God sent his Son to die for the sins of every single person that has ever existed,” hoping that people will accept God’s offer of love. However, if they reject his offer, they must pay for their sins in hell—but God is also holy. What utter nonsense and obvious incongruity! God cannot require a man or woman to pay for their sins, if those sins have already been paid for by a Substitute; otherwise, God is unjust and unholy, not only for requiring the payment of sins that have already been paid for by Christ on the cross, but by raising up and glorifying a failure who did not accomplish what he was sent to do.

Preachers today deny all sorts of vital doctrines which are inseparable from the gospel of God’s free grace. They deny the total depravity of the human race, which is spiritually dead in trespasses and sins; these preachers do this by teaching that man has a will, which is free enough to choose God and follow after righteousness. Have they not heard those wholesome words of the Lord Jesus Christ, where He said, “No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day”? These wicked wolves in sheep’s clothing denounce that blessed doctrine of eternal election by saying that God is unfair in choosing one person and passing by another. Have they not read those wonderful words of the Apostle, where he wrote, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: according as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved”? Have ye not read the scriptures? Hath it not been told you from the beginning? God has honoured His word above all His name and will you dare trample it under your rotten feet as if it were some common thing?

The common lies of Arminians today obviously contradict the revealed truth of God; no person with a sound mind can deny that this is the case. However, there is another great lie which has been taught from pulpits everywhere for the last 500 years or so. This lie is so prevalent in the world that Arminians and Calvinists alike, religious people and secular people, wise and unwise, old and young have all been duped by its deceptiveness. The oppositions of science falsely so-called have caused the majority of the human race to believe a lie so ungodly, so foolish, and so ridiculous that it causes men and women to deny all their God-given senses and to defend a teaching so ludicrous that one day people will be ashamed that man could have ever been foolish enough to fall for it. That lie is the spinning ball earth in the vacuum of outer space—also known as heliocentricity.

Most people who call themselves Christians will readily denounce the heresies of the big bang theory and the theory of evolution. There is no conceivable way a person can read the Bible with honesty and conclude that God created the world by a big bang or that He created mankind and all living things through the process of evolution. Likewise, there is no conceivable way a person, especially a Christian, can read and study God’s word with the eye of faith and believe that the earth God created is a spinning, wobbling, orbiting, globe that moves through an infinite vacuum known as outer space. If a person believes that God’s word teaches this heliocentric heresy, they may as well believe that the scriptures teach the universal love of God, the universal redemption of Christ, the partial depravity of man, resistible and useless grace, righteousness by the works of the law, or any other lie which is not according to the doctrine of Christ.

How can I say such a thing? Because none of those lies are taught in God’s word, and we know that no lie is of the truth! Brethren, would we not much rather bow to the teaching of our heavenly Father and Creator instead of believing seducing spirits and the doctrines of devils? Let God be true and every man a liar! According to the teaching of the entirety of God’s word, the world that God created for mankind to live in is a singular place. What I mean by that is that there are no other worlds or planets that man can inhabit; other worldly habitation or colonization simply is not possible because other planets do not exist! (The one instance in the Bible where the word planet is used, in 2 Kings 23:5, is the Hebrew word for constellations or zodiac. Sirius, Vega, and Polaris—very well-known stars—along with Jupiter, Saturn, Mars, and all the other so-called planets of our supposed solar system are of a non-material nature. They are not physical masses, but merely luminous manifestations without substance.) All those little shining lights we see sparkling in the heavens above are stars that God placed in the firmament—that physical, literal, glass dome over the earth which separates the waters from the waters. The earth is the only terra-firma that God has created for mankind to live upon—everything we see in the heavens is of a completely different nature than the earth (1 Corinthians 15:39-41). There are no other planets because outer space does not exist except in the CGI of Satan’s headquarters. The sun and the moon are two distinct and separate lights which are in circuit over and above the earth. God’s word repeatedly teaches that this physical world is stable, fixed, and immovable because God placed it on a physical foundation with physical pillars.

God declares that He sits upon the “circle of the earth”, not upon “the ball” or “globe” or “sphere” or “oblate spheroid” of the earth. Do words have meaning or not? Must we believe what God says, or does God allow faith to pick and choose what it wants to believe? Listen carefully—a ball is a 3-dimensional spheroid, but a circle is a 2-dimensional flat disc. God in His wisdom knows the difference between a circle and a ball; the question is do you know the difference. Isaiah, the man who wrote Isaiah 40:22, also knew the difference between a circle and a ball; the question is do we know the difference?

Many will foolishly argue that this is not a matter of importance, since it supposedly has nothing to do with the salvation of God’s people, but just the opposite is true. If there are no foundations of the earth, then how could God have chosen His elect from the foundation of the world? If there is not a foundation of the earth, there is no election of grace before it was established! To say that the earth does not have literal foundations is to say that God did not literally choose His people in Christ from the foundation of the earth. Besides all of this, we have already established that no lie is of the truth, and that applies here just as it does to every other doctrine of God’s word. If the earth is not a stationary circular plane, how shall every eye see Christ coming in the clouds during His second advent? Let me remind you, again, that no lie is of the truth. Who are we going to believe? Will we dare add to or take away from any of the prophecies of God’s written word (Rev 22:18-19) by making it fit into the lies of modern pseudoscience, or will we bow the knee to God’s revelation, gladly throwing the wisdom of this world to the curb, where it belongs? How long halt ye between two opinions?
