A Short Study of Malachi 3:16-17

“Then they that feared the LORD spake often one to another: and the LORD hearkened, and heard it, and a book of remembrance was written before him for them that feared the LORD, and that thought upon his name. And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him.”
(Malachi 3:16-17)

These encouraging verses have a dark backdrop. This time in Israel was a bad one indeed. Many had shirked from their service to God. They complained about it, did it reluctantly, and some apparently quit serving Him altogether.

Things were so twisted in Israel that people were saying it was vain to serve God (Malachi 3:14), and were even celebrating those who did evil (Malachi 3:15). Everything was turned upside down. But in this very situation, the prophet Malachi had an encouraging word. Those who feared God and sought to serve Him were noticed by God. The above verses highlight the beautiful thoughts that God had of them.

We in the 21st century can compare our situations to those of Malachi’s day. Our world seems so twisted. Many have turned their back on God, not seeing a need to love, serve, or obey Him. Evil and wickedness, instead of being frowned upon, are celebrated and rewarded. As the prophet Isaiah spoke, evil is called good and good is called evil. These circumstances can sometimes lead followers of Christ to be discouraged and faint-hearted.

But, remember, Christian, God takes notice of those who are seeking to serve Him!

Though our efforts may seem so comparatively small to all that is occurring in the world around us, God takes notice. Those who fear God and serve Him in this generation may be ignored, scorned, and ridiculed by the world, but they are not ignored by God. So let us not be weary in well-doing, but faithfully continue to seek and serve the Lord God. We never know what kind of impact our lives will have. May we let our lights shine in this dark world for the glory of our Savior.

He will remember and bless us!
