Is Jesus Christ Your Sabbath?

Christians are charged with wrongdoing by some for not observing the Sabbath days of the Law of Moses (see Exodus 20:6-11). Our accusers tell us it is not enough to believe on and trust in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for salvation. They say we must also keep the Sabbath days.

I generally ask my accusers, ‘Are you judging me regarding sabbaths?’

They assumedly recognize that my question is couched in Biblical language, for the Holy Spirit exhorts Christians to “Let no one judge you regarding sabbaths” (Colossians 2:16 abbreviated). And they assumedly know that if it is wrong for a Christian to be judged regarding sabbaths, then it is wrong for another to judge regarding sabbaths. They therefore declare that they are not judging me regarding sabbaths.

But if I confess that Christ is my only Sabbath, and that I do not observe Sabbath days, and that I esteem every day alike, they contradict their former answer by judging against me for doing so.

But the Holy Spirit tells Christians that Christ wiped “out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross” (Colossians 2:14).

The handwritten requirements were the Law of Moses [see Exodus 34:1, Exodus 34:28].

And the Holy Spirit declares that the sabbaths of the Law of Moses were but a shadow of Christ the substantive Sabbath (Colossians 2:16-17).

The Christian Sabbath is Christ, not a weekday!

We are therefore admonished by God to cease from all our legal works, to enter into Christ’s rest/sabbath through faith in Him, and to have our sabbath-keeping in Him (Hebrews 4:1-11).

We who obey God are admonished against observing sabbaths of the law (Galatians 4:1-11), for Christ freed us from the law (Romans 7:1 -6). We are at liberty to esteem every day alike (Romans 14:5).

If Christ is your Sabbath, you will obey the exhortation to delight yourself in Him and to “call the Sabbath a delight” (Isaiah 58:13f). And you will ignore those who would judge you regarding their sabbaths.
