Sleeping – But Awake

“I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night. I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I defile them?”
(Song of Solomon 5:2-3)

Within the nature of every child of Adam is a desire for sleep (or death). Continual warrings and strife flow from this same nature (founded in sin). Only a believer knows that he is prone to this sleepy disposition (or spiritual blindness) concerning the things of God.

He knows that a seed of rebellion is always ready to burst forth against all that is good, honorable, and right, since he also knows something about the root which conceived the seed (total spiritual darkness and indescribable hatred of God’s glory).

There is also something glorious that a believer can see within himself (but which he knows is not of himself). He sees that his heart is awake (spiritually alive), because by election a new heart (a new nature, a new mind) has been imparted (by the grace of God in Christ) to his soul.

His new heart sees by faith the glory of God Almighty in the face of Jesus Christ the Lord. His awakened heart hears the voice of his Beloved ever calling out to His bride of believers. Still, even knowing these things, the bride will continually doze in rebellion at the calling of Christ by His Spirit through His Word, giving Him but excuses.

She must be continually awakened by faith and made to know that the Holy Ghost has quickened her, and has given her a heart that truly longs after the Beloved Son of God.
