How Old Was Jehoiachin When He Began To Reign?
2nd Kings 24:8 says that “Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months.”, but 2nd Chronicles 36:9 says that “Jehoiachin was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned three months and ten days in Jerusalem: and he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.”
How do we reconcile the two?
The Bible, of course, doesn’t have any mistakes in it. It’s just that it does not always give us ready information so we can harmonize seemingly conflicting statements.
When we work through the kings of Judah carefully, we will find that Jehoiachin was the son of Jehoiakim, and when he was eight years old, he became co-regent with his father. They reigned together ten years.
After his father Jehoiakim was removed from the throne by King Nebuchadnezzar, Jehoiachin, at eighteen years old began to reign alone and he reigned only for three months.
It was not uncommon in that day for a king to make his son co-regent because they were living in very perilous times. By such a maneuver, the father ensured that the kingly line would remain in his family should he be taken out suddenly.
