A Short Study of Jonah 2:7

“When my soul fainted within me I remembered the Lord: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.”
(Jonah 2:7)

Jonah’s soul was fainting because of the disheartening and hopeless situation he presently experienced. He had run away from God, blatantly disobeying the calling of God to preach at Nineveh. God sent a powerful storm to stop Jonah’s run-away journey. Jonah probably thought he was being thrown to his death by the sailors into the sea, but the big fish swallowed him up. Here he was, underwater, in a fish’s belly.

But Jonah remembered the Lord.

What good would that do?

Jonah had sinned against the Lord.

Jonah remembered the just God is also a God of deep mercy.

For the first and only time, the Scriptures mention a prayer going from underwater in a big fish’s belly all the way up to God’s holy temple!

Jonah was blessed to “remember” the Lord, and God had great mercy upon him.

You may not literally be in a fish’s belly today, but your soul may be fainting within you. Remember the Lord. Turn to Him. Trust His mercy, grace and love. The prayers of God’s people can go from dire circumstances all the way to God’s holy dwelling place.
