Esther Study Guide – Esther 9:1-12
• What is the meaning of the “twelfth month”? (Esther 9:1)
It is the last month in the last year, for Haman planned this to be the last year for the Jews.
This is the glorious month for those who are spiritual “Jews”, for they will see the New Heaven and New Earth.
The 13th day occurs 6 times, in Esther 3:12-13, Esther 8:12, Esther 9:1, Esther 9:17-18; very unusual in the Bible.
The number 13 is associated with the end of time.
The “king’s commandment and his decree” are as one expression; Esther 2:8, Esther 3:15, Esther 4:3, Esther 8:14, Esther 8:17, Esther 9:1, Esther 9:14.
What was the King’s commandment and his decree that was to be put in execution?
It was the letter of Haman “to destroy, to kill, and to cause to perish, all Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, even upon the thirteenth day of the twelfth month” (Esther 3:13).
And in addition there was the letter of Mordecai “Wherein the king granted the Jews which were in every city to gather themselves together, and to stand for their life, to destroy, to slay, and to cause to perish, all the power of the people and province that would assault them, both little ones and women” (Esther 8:11).
What was that day?
It was the day when Gog and Magog compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city, and fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them (Revelation 20:8-9).
• Where did the Jews gather themselves together? (Esther 9:2)
In their cities throughout all the provinces?
What does that mean spiritually?
It means that they were preparing themselves to defend themselves. Where do we gather to learn how to defend ourselves?
We gather in Prayer and Bible studies.
Why could no man withstand them? It was because God was with them (Romans 8:31-32).
Who was fighting against the Jews? All those who were on the side of Antichrist.
And who had the fear of them? Not everyone, but all the elect, whom God intended to save.
Are there three categories of people? No, only two: elect and non-elect.
What information does that give us about That Day? It is the Last Day.
This is the day when God will reveal who His elect are.
• The rulers of the provinces helped the Jews. What does that mean? (Esther 9:3)
It means that rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil (Romans 13:3)
Who is their king? Satan is their king, but he is no longer in the business of killing Christians.
What is the fear of Mordecai? It is the fear of being accountable for their sins.
Why did Mordecai wax greater and greater? (Esther 9:4) Because he represents Christ. He must increase, but I must decrease (John 3:30)
• With what did the Jews smite their enemies? (Esther 9:5)
With the stroke of the sword.
What sword is that? It is the Sword of the Spirit, the Word of God (John 12:48). Doesn’t that remind you of Revelation 11:5?
What part of the congregation is mentioned in Revelation 11:4? The elect only. Those who bring the true Gospel.
• What does Shushan the Palace represent? (Esther 9:6)
It is the place of the true saints where God can be found in the souls of those who worship there (John 14:23).
What in the Bible is called the place where the King resides? (Hebrews 12:22-23); the Assembly of the Firstborn.
How many enemies were killed in Shushan the Palace? 500. It is a symbolic number of those in the church who are not saved.
What does it mean that the 10 sons of Haman were still alive in Shushan the palace? It means that Satan is alive and well even in the “church” system where Antichrist tries to bring his heresies.
Did Jesus tell us in a parable that this will be so? (Matthew 13:24-43)
• These are the names of the ten sons of Haman; show how they can be for glory as well as for deception.
Parshandatha = “given by prayer”
Dalphon = “dripping”
Aspatha = “the enticed gathered”
Poratha = “frustration”
Adalia = “I shall be drawn up of Jah”
Aridatha = “the lion of the decree”
Parmashta = “superior”
Arisai = “lion of my banners”
Aridai = “the lion is enough”
Vajezatha = “strong as the wind”
These are glorious names. They tell us that Satan is coming as an angel of light (2nd Corinthians 11:13-15).
• On That Day the 10 sons of Haman were killed (Esther 9:10) But on the spoil laid they not their hand? Why not? It was the last day; silver and gold are worth nothing.
• On That Day the number of slain were again mentioned (Esther 9:11). Two times: it is done for emphasis.
God emphasizes the distinction between the enemies within Shushan the Palace and the enemies that were in the provinces, much like the enemies in the false church and those in the show church (Revelation 11:1-2).
Then the King reported it to Esther. (Esther 9:12)
Why?
Why does the King ask Esther what they have done in the provinces? Because we will know (1st Corinthians 6:2).
Why does the King ask Esther her petition? She could ask for more (John 16:26-27).
Jesus is LORD!
