A Short Study of Psalm 143:11
“Quicken me, O Lord, for Thy name’s sake: for Thy righteousness’ sake bring my soul out of trouble.”
(Psalm 143:11)
The word “quicken” here has the idea of reviving, animating, and refreshing. All Christians surely know what it is to feel the need for quickening. Sadly, we all experience those periods of spiritual sluggishness. We may be reading the Scriptures, hearing the sermons, and engaging in prayer. Yet, the Word doesn’t carry the same punch and the times of prayer are not as free and strengthening as in times past.
We can feel ourselves slipping in various areas. Thankfully, there is a solution and there is hope in such a case. The Shepherd of Psalm 23 is said to restore our souls. The God who starts a work in the hearts of His people is faithful to not ultimately forsake that work. We can with confidence call upon God to renew and revive us. We can seek Him that our love for Christ will once again burn like a glowing blaze, and that His Word will once again be our delight.
Why do we seek this reviving?
Is the motive purely selfish, just so we can feel good about ourselves?
That is not it.
The purpose for this desire and prayer is ultimately for “Thy name’s sake.” That is, we seek the Lord to revive our spiritual life so that we can with better vigor bring glory and honor to His name. Since God is ever jealous of His glory and honor, surely this is a prayer that pleases Him.
