A Short Study of Matthew 8:28

“And when He was come to the other side into the country of the Gergesenes, there met Him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way.”
(Matthew 8:28)

In this verse, light encounters darkness. Good matches up with deep evil. These men were possessed by the power of evil, scaring people to the point that they didn’t even pass by that way. The rest of the story informs us, however, that even the demonic spirits that exist in this world are subject to the authority of Jesus Christ. Verse 32 records that Jesus said just one word, “Go,” and they departed. The spirits even recognized the Son of God and knew His power over them.

Today is no different from that one in the sense that great spiritual darkness still has strong influence. The powers of darkness take on different forms, not always so blatant and obvious as was the case with these two Gergesene men. Darkness often takes on a very sophisticated and attractive form, deceiving many.

How do we not shrivel away in fear, or how do we defend ourselves from such evil?

The answer is the same one today as it was that day: Jesus Christ!

He still has all power and authority in heaven and earth, His rule extending even over the spiritual darkness of our age. There is no match for His power. By staying close to Him and obtaining strength from His Word, we can be armed against the evils of darkness. Let us also remember the prayer that Jesus taught us to pray, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever.”

All hail the power of Jesus’ name!
