A Study Of John 3:7

“Marvel not that I said unto thee, ye must be born again.”
John 3:7

Jesus tells Nicodemus not to marvel (be surprised) that ye must be born again. Nicodemus should have known from Old Testament scriptures of the new birth which we looked at in previous verses, but I’ll repeat here:

Ezekiel 36:24
For I will take you from among the heathen (those in false religion/the lost and dying world), and gather you out of all countries (all heathen religions; God has His people all over the earth), and will bring you into your own land (not a physical land – a spiritual land – the kingdom of God in the new birth).

Ezekiel 36:25
Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you (the Word of God applying Christ’s work for His people to experience through the Holy Spirit), and ye shall be clean (forgiven) from all your filthiness (sins), and all your idols (you will be delivered from any and all false religion that adds to Christ’s work), will I cleanse you.

Notice God says “I (God) will cleanse you” – you don’t cleanse yourself; God cleans ……BY GRACE!

This teaching of the new birth or born again is explained wonderfully in Titus 3:5-7.

Titus 3:5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;

Titus 3:6
Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;

Titus 3:7
That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Read this passage again: this is the new birth!

Jesus said in our text: “Marvel not that I say unto thee you must be born again”

This is the water that Jesus spoke of to the woman at the well in John 4:14.

John 4:13
Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water (well water; drinking water) shall thirst again:

John 4:14
But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

Jesus’ promise to sinners:
“Him that cometh to me (for ALL of salvation) I will in no wise (way) cast out”
(John 6:37)
