Christ, God’s Just Delight

“A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.”
(Proverbs 11:1)

We are always disgusted with injustices done on earth in our legal system, when criminals go free because of loop-holes or technicalities in the law, when innocent people are falsely accused and punished. God has given every man a conscience from which we naturally detest such perversions of the laws of the land and society.

When it comes to God’s law and salvation, men not only look over and tolerate such injustice, they applaud and boast in it. This is the case whenever sinners approach a holy and just God and seek to be justified and accepted on the basis of their own works. If God were to accept such works from sinners, it would be the supreme injustice of the universe. He would have to judge us by a false balance, a balance less than perfect, righteous, and holy.

He would have to deny Himself because He is in His very nature holy and cannot accept less than perfection. This is why the only “just weight” upon which God can and will save and accept sinners is the perfect righteousness of His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, imputed to sinners.

This is God’s delight because Christ and His finished work on the cross is God’s delight – “Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth Me, that I am the LORD which exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth: for in these things I delight, saith the LORD” (Jeremiah 9:23-24)
