In The Word of God we read about “Publicans” – Who Were They?

In the New Testament we see the word “publican” in our English translations of the Word of God.

What is a “publican”?

Well, the word “publican” is just another word to define a “tax collector”.

These men were looked upon by the Jews as the ‘lowest of the low’ because they were employed by the Roman government that ruled over the jews of that day.

Not only were they employess of the Roman government who would collect taxes from the people, they were also dishonest. They collected far more tax than they should have, driven by their own greed, and so they were disdained and viewed by the jews as being in the same class as a harlot or a fornicator.
