John Berridge and Plain Preaching

John Berridge was remarkably careful to preach with great plainness of speech – so much so, that is possible, there might not a word be uttered but the meanest of his hearers could understand.

On one occasion, when Mr. Romaine had been preaching among the people whom he served, after the service Mr Burridge said, “Brother Romaine, your sermon was good, but my people cannot understand your language.”

Mr. Romaine requested to mention that what it was he had said, “You have endevoured to prove,” said Mr. Berridge, “that God is omniscient and omnipresent;but if you had said that God was Almighty and knew everything, they would have understod you.”
