What Does “No Continuing City” in Hebrews 13:14 Refer To?
We read in Hebrews 13:14, “For here have we no continuing city, but we seek one to come.”
Let’s tie this together to Hebrews 11:8-10, where we read:
Hebrews 11:8
By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
Hebrews 11:9
By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
Hebrews 11:10
For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
What city is this?
God gives us the answer in Hebrews 11:16.
Hebrws 11:16
But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.
For now this world that we live in is our homeland. We live in some building on earth and we find our livelihood here. But this is not a continuing city. It is very temporary. When Christ returns, the whole universal will be destroyed. Thankfully, when we become born again, we are given an eternal city to which we belong – namely, the spiritual Jerusalem. It is the kingdom of God in which we will dwell with our Lord forever.
We long for the time when we will go to be in heaven, for then we will no longer be a part of this sin cursed world with all of its suffering and sorrow. When a believer dies, he leaves this world and goes to be with Christ in heaven. And then, after he receives his new body on the last day, he will forever dwell in the continuing City of New Jerusalem.
